The top baby names in Scotland were revealed yesterday with Jack taking the honours for males for the seventh time in the past decade, and Sophie once again taking the top spot for female names, after five years being ranked as most popular.

Lewis took second place for boys’ names which has shared the top two spots with Jack for the last decade. James jumped up to third place followed by Liam, and Logan rounding out the top five.

For girls, Olivia was the second most popular name followed in order by Ava, Emily, and Lucy in the fifth position.

Certain names on the list made large notable jumps possibly due to celebrities with Miley taking a jump of 190 places on the list, and Owen jumping 26 places to land at number 32 on the list of most popular boy’s names.

Overall, there were 3977 girls’ names registered in Scotland and 2995 boys’ names registered, which combined means 6972 different names were registered in 2009. Statistics show that out of these names parents are now more willing to take risks and altering the spellings of common names or simply choosing unusual names to begin with.

Two of the most unique names on the list in 2009 were Vanilla for a girl and Denim for a boy.

Some of the more popular names rank lower on the list since multiple spellings of the same named are ranked separately making names such as Aimee and Amy two separate rankings although when placed together they would have ranked second place for girls’ names.

The New York City Health Department has released their list of the most popular names in NYC in 2009 with Sophia and Jayden topping the list.

What is unique about the New York City list is that outside of the most popular girls and boys names, the city also broke the top names down by ethnicity which proved to be interesting as well.

Even more unique is the fact that the top boys name in the city is actually the top name for the subcategories of black and Hispanic boys’ names as well.

Sophia the made the top of both the white and Asian lists as well, but only took first place in the Asian category while it dropped to third place in the subcategory of white girls names topped by Olivia, Esther, and Sarah. Madison topped the list of black girls’ names (6th overall) and Ashley (7th overall) topped the list of Hispanic names.

For boys the list remained largely unchanged from last year with Daniel (2nd overall) topping the list for white boys and Ryan (tied for 10th overall) topping the list for Asian boys. Thus, it seems that while girls’ names got a bit more creative, parents stuck to their familiar favourites for the family namesakes.

Jack, Michael, William and Stephen seem to be losing ground as some of the most popular names for baby boys in England. According to official government statistics the most popular name for young boys to be “Christened” with is now not a Christian name at all, but a Muslim one.

Heading the boys name league table for 2008 in many parts of the country including the capital, the North West, Yorkshire, the Midlands and Humberside is Mohammed. The figures released in a highly detailed statistical report from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show the emergence of the name surpassing the more traditional popular names.

This is the first time that an Islamic boys name has been the number one choice in any part of the UK let alone several major areas. There are several different possible spelling variations available but for the purpose of the statistics these different versions were all classed as one name as that is already a standard employed for such traditional names as Tom and Thomas and Charles and Charlie.

This is the first time a region by region statistical analysis has been used in previous years there was only a national list of most popular names. Last year saw 1825 boys named Mohammed or its different spelling variations this compares with the previous most popular name Daniel which could only manage 840 naming’s or less than 50% of the number of Mohammed’s.

Strangely London is not the first European capital city to find Mohammed as the number one choice, in fact Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Brussels and Oslo has had it as the most popular choice in recent years.

The most popular girl’s name with over 5300 registrations was Olivia followed by Ruby with 4925 and in the number 3 position was Emily with 4875. Across the globe there are at least 15 million Mohammed’s making it the most popular boy’s name on the planet.
